Dhani Harrison, who was one of the driving factors behind getting the Beatles: Rock Band made, is apparently now a consultant for Harmonix and MTV Games. He’s on tour with his band, thenewno2, and opening for Wolfmother, but he had a chance to interview with the Chicago Tribune, and this is what he had to say:

“I’m working on ‘Rock Band 3′ and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game… Give me a couple years, it’s going to happen.”

The Boston Herald also managed to get some minor info out of Dhani regarding Rock Band 3:

Now Harrison is working on “Rock Band 3” to make it even more realistic. His goal: to get the game to actually teach people to play music, not just to pantomime in rhythm.

I assumed there would be some sort of progression in terms of gameplay from Rock Band 2 to Rock Band 3, but new, realistic peripherals that will actually allow you to learn how to play real music is a pretty significant jump in gameplay!

Activision Notes Third Quarter Results, Music Titles Still Driving Sales

Activision Blizzard recently announced its third-quarter results and, unsurprisingly, the Guitar Hero franchise is still carrying the publisher and solidifying its position as the number one third-party in the industry.

Through the first nine months of 2009, Guitar Hero World Tour was recognized as the number one best-selling third-party title in North America according to NPD Group data and with the launch of Guitar Hero 5 in September, the company stated the two Guitar Hero entries have maintained top-10 best-selling status in the U.S.

With its 2009 titles up through September, the company is reporting it has gained an additional five points over the previous year in the U.S. market share of the music/dance genre of video games, bringing the company to 51% of the market. Also from the previous year, the company noted combined franchise sales of Guitar Hero have increased on a combined basis of 20% according to NPD Group and Europe's Charttrack and Gfk.

Robert Kotick, CEO of the company noted, "Year to date through September 30, the Guitar Hero franchise was the #1 best-selling third-party franchise in North America and Europe. For the month of September, sales of music games in the U.S. increased 72% in dollars year over year, which demonstrates the sustained interest in this new and important game category."

Even though many analysts are stating the music game industry is slowing to crawl, the 72% increase from September 2008 isn't too much of a surprise, when Rock Band 2 released only on the Xbox 360, DanceDanceRevolution X and Hottest Party 2 were pitched onto the market and the only current sales from Guitar Hero stemmed from a release of Aerosmith from three months prior. This year, the releases of Guitar Hero 5 and The Beatles: Rock Band (reported as the number-one selling music game for September) alone should have launched 2009 well beyond the previous year based on sales.

As for the remainder of the year, Activision has high hopes on the performance of DJ Hero and Band Hero for its music game sector. There is still no solid word on whether or not the recent lawsuit reported by the L.A. Times against Activision filed in court by the band No Doubt over its avatar usage in Band Hero will effect the franchise, but many online accounts report Activision is firm and confident in its stance the band members were used within legal bounds. The Band Hero title released just this week so it is too early to say how the title is performing and even though DJ Hero has been on the market for a couple of weeks, it is still too soon to observe NPD Group data, although ChartTrack identified the game as the 20th best-selling title in the U.K. for the week ending Oct. 31. Surely, the holiday rush will pick up speed in the near future and once we hear those results, we'll truly be able to judge on the holding power of the rhythm game in North America.

Next week will see the Rock Band debut of The White Stripes with three of the band's songs to be included in next week's update - Tuesday for Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii and Thursday for Playstation 3. The full DLC offering for the week will include:

The Damned – “Smash It Up (Part II)”
Kasabian – “Club Foot”
The White Stripes – “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”
The White Stripes – “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine”
The White Stripes – “Icky Thump”

Each individual track will total at $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points) per track and, as usual, 360 and PS3 owners have the luxury of scooping up all three of The White Stripes' songs for the package price of $5.49 (160 Microsoft Points). For owners of LEGO Rock Band, "Icky Thump" is the only song of the above bunch that will not appear in the LEGO Rock Band Music Store.

And, of course, two more songs will appear in the Rock Band Unplugged store for $1.99 a piece:

No Doubt – “Excuse Me Mr.”
Dropkick Murphys – “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”

Music-Infused 0D Beat Drop to Hit Next Week

We're receiving word about yet another downloadable game title for the Xbox LIVE Arcade format that is looking to fuse music and puzzle elements together, but for Aksys's 0D Beat Drop, developed in Japan by Arc System Works, players will only have to wait until next week to get their hands on the downloadable.

0D Beat Drop joins the classic falling block pattern puzzle genre, however, the gameplay has elements of rhythmic timing to it. Fans of Puyo Puyo should feel at home with the general gameplay, but the BPM mechanic switches the mechanics up a bit. Players are required to match up three or more of the same-colored jewel, but to eliminate the bunch, players will need to set the final piece down on-beat with the current music, with the beat dispalyed via an on-screen equalizer for each player. Also, players can place any pieces down on beat to build up a combo meter that increases the attack potential of pieces sent to opponents when a group is cleared.

Being developed in Japan, Arc System Works collaborated with Japanese act Sweet Vacation to feature tracks in the game and the developer has indicated it will also be featured in one of the game's backgrounds.

However, the game allows players to utilize any music stored on the Xbox 360 or an external USB device to craft their own experience. 0D Beat Drop will analyze the beats per minute of the music and utilize it during gameplay (this feature only applies to the single-player mode, however, leaderboards will be made available for the feature). The title will offer up online and local modes with versus, co-op and battle royale options available for up to four players. Players can also play through planet quest, survival, time attack, co-op and task modes, with 21 different styles of backgrounds and blocks to see through the course of the game.

Slated for next week, players can expect to see the title launch on Wednesday where the game will cost 800 Microsoft Points ($10) to download. Until then, feel free to check out a video of the game in action with the title's four-player battle royale mode:
Konami trying jubeat again in the US?

Konami is apparently holding another run of secret location tests here in the US. Today I caught wind that they're testing a modified version of jubeat ripples in the US under the name jukebeat. I was told that the machine was recently at Sherman Oaks Castle Park in California with absolutely no announcement. Its unknown if the machine is still there or has been relocated yet. Apparently the reason for these hidden location tests is because Konami feels that when the community all shows up for them, it's a misrepresentation of how well the game will actually do. Hence the canceled release of UBeat.

Some information to back up our little tidbit here comes from The Royalty Network in the form of a licensing announcement:

"Video Game ‘Juke Beat’ to use “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” & “Blame It”…

Dead Or Alive song “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” (Burns/Coy/Lever/Percy) and “Blame It” (Brown/Conte/Foxx/Henderson/Melancon/Najm/Nash/Preston/Walker) have been requested to appear in the upcoming video game. We Sub-Publish “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” on behalf of Westbury Music (PRS) and Publish “Blame It” on behalf of Tenyor Music (BMI) and Roynet Music (ASCAP)."

I'll keep everyone updated on this as more details arise. Hopefully I can at the very least, stumble upon this at a random location around here and give a report on it.

To make the title even more unique, the company is touting an external keyboard peripheral for use with the game on the Nintendo DS system.

The title aims to teach users how to play the piano through 10 lessons and a number of mini-games. Not only will the title have tutorials, but, also, a quickplay game where Easy Piano displays prompts to hit certain keys "similar to other popular music games currently on the market." A U.S. KeyboardMania? Perhaps. With that, the title will feature "some of the world's most famous songs, spanning time and genres." The game will feature two difficulty levels, a creation mode to allow players to record up to four three-minute-long songs and a number of other musical instruments will be featured along with the piano.

Right now, the goal for VALCON is to have the title out in the territory in early 2010. If you live in Europe, however, you only have a couple of weeks to wait for this one - Game Life is releasing the PAL version on Nov. 20.

jubeat ripples APPEND Detailed

Alpha Station and am-net have both dropped details on the latest jubeat incarnation.

The name, jubeat ripples APPEND, appears to suggest that this will be more of an upgrade than a brand new game, but it seems there will be enough content in ripples APPEND to have any jubeat fan counting the days to its release.

In all, ripples APPEND promises to boast a songlist of over 130 songs, including over 20 new songs to the series. Not surprisingly, those 20 new songs will include some popular licensed music tracks, but IIDX fans may now have a reason to get into jubeat, as ripples APPEND will apparently have a "collaboration" with SIRIUS. Although they don't really elaborate on that, but it appears you will able to unlock hidden songs in ripples APPEND by playing SIRIUS, which may just mean that you'll be seeing a few SIRIUS crossovers in ripples APPEND.

jubeat ripples APPEND will be released in March 2010, and upgrade kits will sell for the uber-cheap price of 98,000 Yen (which in today's topsy turvy relationship between the Yen and the Dollar, converts to just under $1,100.).
This vid compares the Scratch Deck to the equipment the company develops for musicians and features Mix Master Mike, who has had a hand in the progress of the title. While you aren't going to see any real Scratch gameplay in the video, it seems plausible that Commotion will have to flesh out gameplay details some time soon. As always, we'll be sure to keep everyone updated on the game's progress.
A Few Small In the Mix Updates

Foreign Media Games is still aiming to bring Armin van Buuren to the Nintendo Wii in 2010, as stated in a bit of an update released for In the Mix: Featuring Armin van Buuren. While still not very much is known about the gameplay mechanics, the most current press release details the game's career mode, which, just like any other rhythm game has you starting out as new to the scene, performing at local venues, based on the city you choose, until you make a name for yourself. This obviously eventually leads to larger clubs, record deals and international fame, but the descriptions that actually lead us into the meat of the game fall within the bounds of the DJ store.

Each performance earns the player money to buy new equipment, which actually seems to affect the gameplay. Listed examples of this mechanic include buying better mixers to have more channels available for mixing and better headphones to assist in beat matching. The only other tidbit we get based on the gameplay is in utilizing various poses and gestures at points in your set to keep the audience hot.

We're still waiting to see what unfolds for In the Mix's gameplay but, to reiterate from our initial post on the title, the game will feature a number of works from Armin van Buuren, including unreleased mixes. On top of those tracks, the game will see some artists included that Armin van Buuren works with regularly. Right now it seems like the title is lined up only for a European release, but we'll see if this changes as the game continues through development.

Chime Announced by OneBigGame, Matsuura Project Listed by Publisher

After forming in 2007, non-profit video game publisher OneBigGame has announced its first release will come courtesy of Zoe Mode, which is creating a music-puzzle game pro bono for the organization. The game in question is entitled Chime, which will have players maneuvering shapes correlating with sound effects from music tracks in an attempt to form rectangular blocks. As the player covers up the play grid with these blocks, the song will build up until 100 percent coverage is achieved, at which point, the full song rings through.

The publisher expects the game to hit Xbox LIVE Arcade this winter and has announced that tracks from Moby and Orbital (Paul Hartnoll) will be included - you'll see "Ooh Yeah" and "For Silence" respectively in the screenshots - but more will be seen in the game.

Being a nonprofit publisher, the games may only be available for a limited period, during which all net proceeds go to various children's charities. Zoe Mode is the first in a series of developers and designers onboard for the publisher, which has more than 15 games in development. This includes developers such as David Perry and Charles Cecil, but, most interesting for us here at Bemanistyle, is the recognition of Masaya Matsuura being included in the mix. The press release notes Matsuura is currently working on "reinventing" the genre with an iPhone release entitled WINtA. Currently, OneBigGame anticipates the rest of these titles to release in 2010.

Konami Announces DanceDanceRevolution Music Fit

We reported the other day that "DanceDanceRevolution Music Fit" had been detailed in the latest Famitsu magazine, but we now have official confirmation from Konami that DanceDanceRevolution Music Fit will be hitting Japanese stores early next year.

As we suspected, this game will be a Japan-port of DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party 3, which hit store shelves in North America this week. Like Hottest Party 3, Music Fit will have a special "Wii Balance Board Mode" along with "Kids Mode" and "DDR School" for beginners.

For those of you thirsting for some J-Pop tunes, Music Fit certainly looks to be delivering on that front. 27 licenses are promised, including the following:

Journey through the Decade
Climax Jump pop'n form
迷宮バタフライ (Meikyoku Butterfly)
シャングリラ (Shangri-La)
「ウイリア*・テル」序曲より ("William Tell" Overture)
侍戦隊シンケンジャー (Samurai Sentai Shikenger)
「カルメン」前奏曲 ("Carmen" Classical Music)
*み (Ayumi)
BUTTERFLY
雫 (Shizuku)
CAT'S EYE
HOT LIMIT
*直になれたら (Sunao ni Naretara)
君を守って君を愛して (Kimi wo Mamotte Kimi wo Aishite
おどるポンポコリン (Odoru Ponpokorin)
Summer rain
空色デイズ (Sorairo Days)
Stairway Generation
創聖のアクエリオン (Sousei no Aquarion)
MY BOY
ブルーバード (Bluebird)
きみもとべるよ！（ピーターパン） (Kimi mo Toberu yo! (Peter Pan)
羞恥心 (Shuuchishin)
イッツ・ア・スモールワールド (It's A Small World)
A Perfect Sky
ミッ*ーマウス・クラブ・マーチ (Mickey Mouse March)
夢をかなえてドラえもん (Yume wo Kanae te Doraemon)

Keep in mind that Konami hasn't listed artists with those songs, which probably indicates that a good portion, if not all, are covers. Many of these songs have been covered for Pop'n music or Jubeat already.

Other than that, Konami's promising over 50 songs in the total list, so you can expect lots of KOs to be filling up the list.

The game is set to be released on January 28th.

Konami's Tomena Sanner Finally Announced to Cross to North America

I'd completely forgotten about Konami's Wii Ware title that launched in Japan with a trailer that featured a gentleman in a business suit breakdancing with the likes of a panda, but, today, Konami of America announced that Tomena Sanner is scheduled to hit the WiiWare service in the first quarter of 2010.

Konami is promising the title will hold true to its zany Japanese origins, in which the game has businessman Hitoshi Susumu behind schedule and running uncontrollably through nine different levels such as the moon, a jungle, the city and more while flipping over cars, riding dinosaurs and other quirky acts.

This wouldn't be Bemanistyle-related news if the title didn't sport some aspects of rhythm, but Tomena Sanner's gameplay is heavily based on timing and at certain intervals, the player will have to take part in dance parties, which, obviously, feature rhythm-based actions. As players contend with samurais, T-rexes, cowboys and other characters, the game is controlled with a single button (remember that Mr. Susumu runs on his own and refuses to stop) that players can use in tandem with a timing-based control system while they jump, dance and fly past obstacles. One of the other more unique aspects of the title is a real-time ticker that scrolls with remarks based on the player's performance. The game will also feature a multiplayer mode which will have up to four players racing against each other to the finish line.

Players will find a number of modes in the title such as an endless mode, an expert turbo mode and leaderboards. There is a domesticated trailer on the game's official site, but, for your pleasure, please find attached this Japanese teaser along with screenshots for the title.
Two Download Titles Promise Unique Music Mechanics - Fret Nice, Beat Hazard

A couple of downloadable titles came to our attention today and while neither is a rhythm-based game in the traditional sense of the word, both are looking to incorporate music themes into the gameplay.

First up is the announcement from Swedish developer Pieces Interactive, with a strong publishing arm in the form of Tecmo, which is looking to develop a platrforming game for Xbox LIVE Arcade and Playstation Network for 2010, entitled Fret Nice. The title is heralded as the first platforming game which players will control entirely with a guitar controller. I've attached photos of the game in this story and I must say the title has a very unique look that goes hand in hand with a unique premise. Is this Donkey Kong Jungle Beat reborn? We'll wait and see as we get closer to the planned "early 2010" release date.

The other title will appear only on the Xbox 360 in the Indie Games downloadables and is entitled Beat Hazard from Cold Beam Games. The title allows players to stream their own music into the game, with the intensity of the music dictating the on-screen action. Beat Hazard comes equipped with 10 pre-made tracks and allows for two players simultaneously for the price of 400 Microsoft Points. You can see the title in action with the following video:

<div align="center"><object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ASusmLRreXw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ASusmLRreXw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object></div>

Konami TV today uploaded its newest entry, with this installment focusing on beatmania IIDX 17 SIRIUS, which released in Japan on the 21st. While the video was recorded back on the date of the game's launch, it does feature some direct feeds of gameplay, menus and game modes and makes a point of showing a lineup of people interested in playing the title.

The bigger news on SIRIUS, however, has been on Pie-kun's coverage of the title and the ongoing updates to provide everyone information on the game's Parallel Rotation unlock system, which is now updated to provide the tune listings through beatmania IIDX 14 GOLD. With so much news hitting us lately, the feature has been knocked off the front page, but if you want to keep up on the latest IIDX SIRIUS happenings, make sure you check out the following posts:
Just Dance to Feature 32 Songs, Professional Choreography

With the rhythm-based minigames seen in the company's Rabbids series, it probably didn't come as a shock to many when Ubisoft announced it would be taking dancing games in this direction with Just Dance. While there had long been rumors floating around in this regard for a good portion of the year, Ubisoft finally officially announced this title just before GamesCom back in August. The title requires only a Wii Remote per player for up to four players total and is being billed as a "true" dance title for the Nintendo Wii. With this, the game's songs have been professionally choreographed to reflect actual dance maneuvers in each of the game's 32 songs.

A couple of days ago, Ubisoft revealed the full tracklisting for the title, which is set to include the following songs:

• Acceptable in the 80's – Calvin Harris
• A Little Less Conversation – Elvis Presley
• Bebe – Divine Brown
• Can't Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue
• Cotton Eye Joe – Rednex
• Hot n' Cold – Katy Perry
• Dare – Gorillaz
• Eye of the Tiger – Survivor (Rocky)
• Fame – In the style of Irene Cara (cover)
• Funplex CSS – The B 52's
• Girls and Boys – Blur
• Girls Just Want to Have Fun – Cindi Lauper
• Groove is in the Heart – Dee-Lite
• Heart of Glass – Blondie
• I Get Around – The Beach Boys
• I Like to Move it – Reel To Real
• Jerk it Out – Caesars
• Jin Go Lo Ba – Fat Boy Slim
• Kids in America – Kim Wilde
• Le Freak – Chic
• Louie Louie – Iggy Pop
• Lump – The Presidents Of The USA
• Mashed Potato Time – Dee Dee Sharp
• Pump up the Jam – Technotronic
• Ring My Bell – Anita Ward
• Step by Step – New Kids On The Block
• Surfin' Bird – The Trashmen
• That's the Way (I Like it) – Kc & The Sunshine Band
• U Can't Touch This – MC Hammer
• Wannabe – The Spice Girls
• Who Let the Dogs Out? – Baha Men
• Womanizer – In the style of Britney Spears (cover)

Just Dance is currently scheduled to release on Nov. 19.

DanceDanceRevolution Music Fit to Hit Japan

Thanks to al2k4 at Zenius for the heads up, it appears Konami is set to release another Wii DanceDanceRevolution game in Japan.

A Japanese poster on 2ch has taken a photograph of a game list in a Japanese magazine that features the title "ダンスダンスレボリューション ミュージックフィット" which translates as "DanceDanceRevolution Music Fit", which appears to be coming out for the Wii.

Beyond that, no details are known at this time. Although we can probably assume that this will be the Japanese equivalent of DanceDanceRevolution Hottest Party 3, as one of the main draws of that game is the use of the Wii Balance Board in a special mode.

There are also indications that this game may have a heavy dose of Japanese licenses, just like フルフル パーティー (the Japanese equivalent of Hottest Party 2) did before it. The latest master songlists shows entries for songs such as Bonnie Pink's "A Perfect Sky" and AAA's "CLIMAX JUMP". Of course, songs appearing on the master songlist do not in any means mean that they will appear in a future game.
